Tips on how to avoid ingrown nails

26 March, 2021 | by Footstudy

Onychocryptosis, commonly known as ingrown toenail, is an inflammation caused by the growth of the nail towards the skin, causing injury to the skin.

The ingrown toenail can appear on any nail, however, it is more frequent on the big toe.

Why do ingrown toenails occur?

There are several factors which cause the nail to become ingrown:

  1. A nail cut that does not respect the shape of the toe;
  2. Trauma to the fingernail (falling objects, prolonged walking, shoes which do not respect the shape and protection of the fingers);
  3. Fungal infection of the nail;
  4. Congenital ungual dystrophies (nail alterations since uterine development);
  5. Cutting of the skin surrounding the nails, causing infections and inflammatory processes);
  6. Use of non-sterile, sometimes contaminated material for nail cutting and hygiene.

The symptoms of ingrown toenails become unbearable, especially pain, inflammation and infection, especially in the area around the affected nail.

Dr. Cristina Costa, podiatrist at FootStudy, gives you some tips on how to avoid ingrown toenails:

  • Try to adjust your footwear to the activity performed;
  • Maintain good hygiene of your feet by using products, preferably non-chemical, so as not to damage the nail's surface;
  • Use clean cutting materials;
  • Do not share nail cutting materials;
  • Control perspiration;
  • Maintain a healthy diet to ensure that nails grow strong and healthy;
  • Consult a Podiatrist for advice on how to cut your nails properly;

If you have any of the symptoms listed below, consult your Podiatrist.

The earlier you treat the ingrown toenail, the lower the risk of associated complications.

- Pain

- Inflammation

- Prickling sensation
