Plantar warts, commonly known as "blackheads", are viral infections caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).

The entry of this virus occurs through small cracks or lesions in the skin of the foot. After entry, they inoculate in the form of a capsule with a thick wall which in areas of contact remain inside, increasing in size, causing pain and discomfort.

HOW TO IDENTIFY THE PLANTAR WART?

Drª Cristina Costa, Podologist at FootStudy - Centro de Conhecimento do Pé gives you some tips on how to identify a plantar wart:

• Abnormal thickening of the skin, yellow or dark in colour;
• Feeling of rounded pocket inside with pain on pressing;
• They can appear individually or in clusters (known as mosaic warts);
• They are contagious and may appear elsewhere;
• A grey or brownish appearance;
• Pain or tenderness to bear weight.

When should I visit a Podiatrist?

Whenever you identify any of the above symptoms you should consult your Podiatrist. Self-care or self-medication often cause the lesion to expand and contaminate other areas of the foot or hands.
