Psoriasis is a skin disease which, although it most commonly appears on the arms, scalp and large areas of the body, can also affect the Feet. There are several types of psoriasis, those affecting the Feet are:
Arthropathic psoriasis: it appears for no apparent reason, accompanied by pain in the distal area of the fingers and toes or in large joints such as the knee.
Psoriasis postulosa: lesions with pustules on the feet and hands.
Palmoplantar psoriasis: lesions appear as fissures on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.
As this is a region which is already predisposed to dry skin, due to a lack of natural moisture, feet with psoriasis need a lot of moisturising, as well as other precautions to prevent the appearance of infections.
Drª Cristina Costa, podiatrist at FootStudy - Foot Knowledge Centre, lists some of the cares to be taken with Feet with psoriasis:
- Moisturise the skin every day;
- Avoid long, hot baths; they may aggravate lesions;
- Avoid using dermo-cosmetics with parabens and irritant substances;
- Give preference to soothing actives, such as thermal water or some essential oils, to calm the itching in the most erythematous (red) areas;
- Sun exposure (not direct sun exposure) and being close to the sea is enough to enjoy the benefits of vitamin D and help control psoriasis lesions.
If in doubt, or if you notice any alteration on your feet, contact your Podiatrist.
